Improving Galway WFC face DLR Waves again after cup win

Stephen Lally's side enjoyed a great FAI Cup win

Stephen Lally’s rapidly improving Galway WFC travel to Dublin on Sunday for a WNL fixture against DLR Waves (2pm ).

A hard earned 1-0 FAI Cup quarter-final success over DLR at Eamonn Deacy Park at the weekend illustrated Galway’s considerable promise which pleased Lally.

“We are absolutely delighted, I felt it was fully deserved,” Lally says. “We had spoken about it before - whatever about footballing wise - we just wanted to match them throughout the pitch. We felt that in the last number of weeks we had been playing a lot better.

“In a game you might only have the ball for 25 minutes, it is what you do in the rest of the time that is important. We certainly didn't match them when we played them a few weeks before in Terryland. We just needed to match their work rate and we did that on Saturday.”

Chloe Singleton’s splendid 82nd minute goal was the crucial moment in a lively encounter. “It was a real cup tie atmosphere, every tackle, everyone did that on the pitch,” Lally adds.

“We probably didn't play as well as we did in other games, I think some of the girls were forcing it a bit more, but they were probably quicker to close us down too.

“The girls did not want to make a mistake because it looked like one goal was going to win it. In fairness to Chloe she was superb when she came on, she scored a cracker.”

Galway’s attitude and application was evident in the build-up to Singleton’s sweet goal with Therese Kinnevey, Rachel Kearns, Emma Starr, and Julie Ann Russell all involved. “Therese Kinnevey did great to keep it in, played a great ball up to Rachel, who took a touch, Emma played it to Julie Ann, what a turn by Julie Ann to spot Chloe.

“What a pass, the weight of pass was unbelievable, in fairness to Chloe she did the rest, she finished superbly.”
