The Galway Homeless and Housing Coalition will hold a socially distanced rally in Eyre Square at 12 noon, this Saturday, September 11.
The protest will be one of a series of such events around the State, organised by the National Homeless and Housing Coalition - a group made up of students' unions, Traveller organisations, left political parties, and trade unions - to demand an end to the housing and homelessness crisis.
Speakers at the Eyre Square event will include Róisín Nic Lochlainn, president of NUIG Students' Union; Nora Corcoran, Galway Traveller Movement; Sinn Féin Galway West TD, Mairéad Farrell TD; Social Democrats Galway City East councillor, Owen Hanley; Ian Ó Dálaigh of Éirígí For a New Republic; and Adrian Curran of People Before Profit.
Galway saw a 9.5 per cent increase in people accessing emergency homeless accommodation in the first three months of this year. Around 3,500 people are on the waiting list for council housing in Galway city, while the private rental market is proving increasingly unaffordable for many people.
