Niwel Tsumbu to play Galway for Volvo Ocean Race

“ANTIDOTES TO the recession don’t come much more potent than this. Niwel Tsumbu’s indomitable, infectious spirit...gives full rein to a sweep of syncopated rhythms that have many of his punters grasping and gasping to keep up.”

So said The Irish Times of the Congolese native and honorary Corkonian who is sure to take Galway by storm when he plays the city during the Volvo Ocean Race stopover.

Niwel Tsumbu and his Song Of The Nations band will play the main stage at the Volvo Ocean Race village in The Docks, on Monday May 25 at 7.30pm. The show will also mark Africa Day in Galway.

Since his arrival in Cork in 2004 from his war torn homeland of the Congo, Niwel has developed an enviable reputation as an elegant and fluent guitarist, vocalist and composer. His album Song Of The Nations showcases his ability to blend African rhythms, rumba, new jazz, classical, and flamenco.

In its review of the album, Hot Press said: “Tsumbu’s guitar playing is nothing short of exceptional and the wall of sound that hits you once you press play is infectious from the start.”
