European glory beckons for Galway ladies

Galway LFC are on the brink of qualifying for the second stage of the Women’s UEFA Cup after two magnificent performances over the weekend in Sarajevo.

First up for Stephen Lally’s side was a tie with the hosts on Friday afternoon and Galway were unlucky not to come away with all three points after dominating for large periods of the game.

Kara Mullins of Galway Bohs went agonisingly close to putting her side ahead midway through the second half but was denied by a retreating home defender after she had rounded the ‘keeper.

A couple of other chances were wasted and in the end they had to settle for a 0-0 draw as the other two teams in the group, FC Zurich Frauen and WFC Universitet Vitebsk, also played out a draw that left the group wide open.

Next up for Galway was the Belarus side from Vitebsk, who have bags of previous experience at this level of competition. But this was to prove no major obstacle for the Galway women as they powered to a 2-0 victory courtesy of goals in either half from Kara Mullins and Salthill Devon’s Ruth Fahy.

This win, achieved in very hot and humid conditions, has put them 90 minutes away from a place in the next round where they would come up against one of their former team mates Niamh Fahy, who has recently joined Arsenal.

Considering they were seeded fourth of the four teams in the group, it will be some achievement if they do come out on top. A draw in their final game will guarantee progress, but they will not have it easy against FC Zurich Frauen, who defeated Sarajevo 3-2 in their second game and only trail the Galway team on goal difference. The final group game takes place on Tuesday afternoon at 1500 (local time ).
