Communities urged to apply for new scheme to improve safety of local roads

Scheme allows the council to work hand-in-hand with communities to improve the quality and safety of roads

Community groups and residents in areas where local tertiary roads are in need of improvement or repair are being encouraged to apply for inclusion in the Community Involvement Scheme.

The scheme allows improvement works to be carried out on lightly used, single lane, or cul de sac roads where communities or local residents are willing to make a financial contribution - typically between 10 and 20 per cent - to the cost of the works, or provide the use of land for enhancements.

Works that can be provided under the scheme include the repair or provision of footpaths, drainage works to alleviate or prevent flooding, or road widening to improve sight distance or facilitate safe passing.

The Minister of State, and Fine Gael Galway West TD, Hildegarde Naughton, is encouraging communities to apply to the Galway County Council before the closing date of Thursday September 16. All valid applications will then be submitted to the Department of Transport for consideration.

“This scheme allows the council to work hand-in-hand with communities to improve the quality and safety of peripheral roads that don’t see much traffic but are very important to a smaller number of people,” she said.

Application forms and further information is available from the Roads and Transportation Unit at the Galway County Council, or from the local authority’s regional offices throughout the county.
