Galway towns and villages to get a facelift under new Government scheme

Oranmore, Oughterard, Headford, Loughrea, Ballygar, and Glenamaddy are the chosen areas for improvement

Oranmore, Oughterard and Headford are among six towns and villages in County Galway set to get a facelift under a €7 million Government scheme to enhance streetscapes across the State.

The Streetscape Enhancement Initiative is aimed at making rural towns and villages more attractive places to live, work and visit by upgrading facades and providing murals; street lighting, including the illumination of architectural features; street furniture; canopies; and street planting, including trees and flower boxes.

The six Galway towns and villages are Oranmore, Oughterard, Headford, Loughrea, Ballygar, and Glenamaddy. Minister of State, and Fine Gael Galway West TD, Hildegarde Naughton [pictured above], is encouraging local business and property owners to contact the Galway County Council to apply for the scheme.

“The type of projects supported under the scheme include strategic collaborations between neighbouring property owners to paint buildings or shopfronts in vibrant colours,” she said. “These are small measures that can make a big difference to the colour and vibrancy of a town, and it’s a real opportunity for these locations to get a makeover as we enter a period of recovery and growth.”
