These are encouraging times for Galway WFC, who host Bohemians in the WNL at Eamonn Deacy Park on Saturday (2pm ).
It has been a demanding campaign for Galway, but Stephen Lally’s team has improved considerably recently which was perfectly illustrated by a convincing 6-1 win over Cork City at the Corribside venue.
Despite falling behind, Galway, inspired by Savannah McCarthy and Emma Starr, came thundering back to emerge comfortable victors.
Chloe Singleton, Starr (2 ), Kate Slevin, Aoife Thompson, and Elle O’Flaherty all struck goals for Galway which pleased Lally.
“It was a fabulous result, in fairness to us, I think that result came from the last number of weeks because we put in some good performances where we just hadn't got the reward or the results we deserved,” Lally said.
“Then we conceded early, but in fairness to them they played out well in the first 10 minutes, they looked good on the ball. By the time our girls understood exactly what we needed them to do, when they did that after the 10 minutes, we were fine after that.
“Everyone was pushing up, if you give people enough time on the ball, they can play. I think our work rate and energy, when we won the ball we were very good on it - we passed it very quickly and we got some fabulous goals.”
With the upcoming September 4 FAI Cup quarter-final against DLR Waves edging closer, Lally is happy that the depth in the Galway squad is increasing.
“It is really encouraging, we nearly have everybody back fit now too,” he says. “That makes competition for places, the training is flying now. In fairness to the girls, who were playing earlier on when the results weren't good, I kept explaining to them that it was their chance, to get up to the level we need to.
“I have a job now to pick a team, but that is the headache you need. They all have to work hard, to put in the performances in training. They are all fighting for places, that can only be good going forward.”
