Developing a greenhouse gas emissions baseline for the city, a ban on fracking, and providing access to information of public interest, are issues the Galway City Council is being called on to address over the next year.
The call comes from the Galway City Community Network - a network of 154 local community, voluntary, and environmental groups - which recently held its Summer Plenary 2021. The plenary was attended, and addressed by the Mayor of Galway, Independent Galway City Central councillor, Colette Connolly.
The greenhouse gas emissions motion, calls on the city council, in partnership with third level institutions, and the relevant State agencies, to “develop a greenhouse gas emissions baseline for the city against which progress/regress must be assessed”.

The GCCN also called on the council to call on the Government to propose a “strong UN General Assembly resolution calling for a global ban on fracking”. Another motion called for the council to ensure all information of public interest is accessible by publishing all its documents in a machine readable format for the benefit of those with sight loss in line with national and EU regulations.
Speaking at the plenary, Mayor Connolly [pictured above] said the new city development plan must “reflect the values of the community sector”. She said it needs to protect recreational facilities and amenities, and make Galway a pedestrian, cycling and disability friendly city.
