Work has begun on the new €17 million Community Nursing Unit facility in Tuam, which will have 50 beds and a high dependency unit.
The new facility, located on the Purcell/Stockwell Road will replace the existing Arus Mhuire building on the Dublin Road which was deemed not fit for purpose by HIQA.
The development has been welcomed by the Independent Galway East TD, Sean Canney, who described it as “the final piece in the Jigsaw which is the Tuam Health Campus”.

The CNU follows on from the construction works which began at the Old Grove site three weeks ago. Together, both projects will provide Tuam and the north Galway region with an ambulance base, a primary care centre, a mental health day hospital, disability service unit, and the Community Nursing Unit. Meanwhile the old Tuam health centre has been refurbished and now accommodates an additional 15 HSE staff.
Dep Canney has publicly acknowledged “the generosity of the late Joe O’Toole”, who donated €7 million towards the nursing home unit.
“This investment will bring construction jobs initially,” he said, “and more than 200 people will be employed permanently on the campus once the works are complete. This will bring enormous benefit to the economic life of the centre of Tuam.”
