Galway online lecture on the Truce and the Civil War

How did people in Galway in 1921 view these momentous events?

An online lecture examining the Truce between the IRA and the British government in 1921 and the Civil War which broke out the following year, takes place this weekend.

‘The truce of 11 July 1921: A natural end to the War of Independence or sowing the seeds of Civil War?’ will be on the Galway Beo Facebook page and Galway Beo YouTube Channel on Sunday July 11 at 1pm. I

The truce was viewed by many republicans as a temporary measure. Some did not believe the ceasefire would hold and that the war with British Crown Forces would resume on an even greater scale. This lecture examines the events surrounding the Truce on both a local and national level and how ordinary fighters and communities in County Galway perceived the end of the War of Independence.

This lecture has been organised by the Galway County Council, and has been funded by the Commemorations Unit of the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media as part of the Decade of Centenaries programme.
