Antrim native takes up post as new NUIG Students’ Union President

“NUIG students will need extra support in these testing circumstances to ensure they have the best student experience,” says new SU president

Róisín NicLochlainn, a law, sociology and politics student from Antrim, today officially becomes the new Students’ Union President at NUI Galway.

Ms NicLochlainn was elected by her peers earlier this year. She previously held the role of vice president/welfare and equality officer with the SU last year. In the post of president she will represent more than 19,000 students at NUIG. Previous holders of the post include Uachtarán na hÉireann, Michael D Higgins, who was the Students’ Union president in 1964.

Challenging times

“I am delighted to take up this prestigious role,” said Ms NicLochlainn. “It will be another challenging year as we are still in the midst of the Covid-19 crisis, but myself and the other SU Officers will be working hard this year for our students. NUI Galway students will need extra support in these testing circumstances to ensure that they have the best possible student experience. We are here for our students and are ready to defend their rights.”

Ms NicLochlainn’s team at the SU will include vice president/welfare and equality officer, Cora Clarke from Ardrahan, County Galway, and vice president/education officer Clodagh McGivern from Tipperary.
