Menopause — a new start in life

Menopause is not an illness, but a natural transition into ending the reproductive phase of a woman’s life. However, it is also a big change for many women with unwelcome signs and symptoms needing intervention. This gets much coverage in media, but there is less talk about how this can be an empowering stage of growth and independence for women where we come into our own, rethink and re-evaluate our lives emotionally, physically, and spiritually, asking, "What do I want? What do I need for my very own wellbeing and happiness now?"

Moving into the menopausal years is a great opportunity for increased independence, freedom, and wellbeing. As ovarian functions decrease, many women may experience greying/dryness of hair and even hair loss, dry skin and lack of vaginal fluids, hot flushes day and night, anxiety, sweating, irritability and tearfulness, difficulty sleeping, and the end of the periods. Even if there are mild symptoms, this is a time to look at one’s overall health as the reduction of oestrogen can lead to chronic problems like osteoporosis, etc, says Galway based acupuncturist Iris Sollie. She has run women’s health clinics in several countries the last 25 years.

Iris Sollie graduated with a BA health science in acupuncture from Sydney University of Technology. She has found, over the years, that a certain combination of different healing modes gives the best results when it comes to women’s health.

“This combination of acupuncture, herbal medicines, and spiritual healing works so well as it assists the body to release feel good endorphins which reduces pain and heat, balances hormones, cooling and lubricating a hot and dry internal environment, easing hot flushes, insomnia, anxiety, mood swings, and headaches, and strengthens the overall energy," she said. "The right treatment will reharmonize the body and a woman can regain control over her life."
