Charlie Concannon netted the only goal of the game as Galway United U19s made a winning start in the National League against Bray Wanderers at Eamonn Deacy Park.
It was a satisfactory result for Brendan O’Connor’s outfit, who were without a string of players due to injury. Alex Murphy, who played for the first team in the victories over Athlone Town and Cabinteely, was involved for United, who travel to Tralee next weekend.
“This year we have a load of players, who have been in training with the first team,” O’Connor says. “Getting that bit of experience is only going to benefit us with the U19s which is super.”
When the current Galway FA season finishes in three weeks O’Connor expects to make a number of additions to his squad.
At U17 level a splendid Shelbourne outfit overcame United 4-1 on Saturday with Mikey McCullagh netting for Martin Devlin’s side, who face an away assignment in Waterford this Saturday.
St Patrick’s Athletic finished strongly in the U15 league to defeat United 6-0 in the capital. A promising collection of U14 footballers edged out the Saints as Jacob Carroll’s goal proved decisive.
Galway WFC enjoyed two triumphs in their opening fixtures. Isabelle Fitzpatrick (2 ), Rola Olusola (2 ), and Lisa Coen scored in the 5-0 success over Bohemians in the U17 league. Next on the agenda is a home fixture at Dangan with Athlone Town the visitors.
