Galway Wool Co-op is ‘giant step forward’ for Galway sheep farmers, says Canney

TD calls on Government to support the woollen industry to help create jobs and give farmers a fair price

A new initiative to form a wool co-operative to market and sell Galway wool is “a giant step forward” for sheep farmers in the county.

This is the view of the Independent Galway East TD, Sean Canney, who congratulated the new Galway Wool Co-op, which last weekend, sold more than 5,000kg of wool to Donegal Woollen Mills at €2.50 per kg. The going rate generally for wool is 20c per kg.

“Wool prices are very low presently, but this initiative demonstrates that wool is a product in demand and there is a necessity to market it effectively,” said Dep Canney. “The Government needs to support the woollen industry to help create jobs in the regions and give farmers a fair price for this natural product.”
