Wine of the week – Adega de Moncão Escolha DOC Vinho Verde 2020

Check out Joyce’s new and exciting wine range from Spain and Portugal selected by Masters of Wine student Antonia Dominguez from Antonia’s Wines.

Antonia Dominguez was born in Jerez, Spain, famed for its sherry production, and was raised in Ireland. She holds a WSET Level 4 diploma in wines and spirits and is currently a student on the prestigious Masters of Wine programme, currently the only MW student in Ireland. Her expertise stretches far beyond Spanish wines, extending to all notable wine regions of the world. Under her meticulous and quality-orientated selection process, she sources stand-out wines at a range of price points and styles, representing wineries from both undiscovered and classic regions. Her selection is based on offering expressive wines with personality, and on bringing Irish consumers as close as possible to an authentic wine experience.

"The first wine I’ve selected for Joyce’s Supermarkets is a crisp, refreshing, zesty, Vinho Verde white wine,"she said. "Increasingly popular, the region of Vinho Verde is located in the northwest of Portugal where the predominant grape variety, Alvarinho, has seen a recent surge in sales here. Ireland is a top export market for its Spanish counterpart, the well-known Albariño grape. Across the border into Portugal, the styles made from this variety are lighter in style and equally as aromatic. This region’s proximity to the Atlantic Ocean also lends a refreshing saline minerality to the wines. Offering wonderful concentration of fruit, in a refreshing, vibrant style, Vinho Verde represents some of the best quality for your money in the market today."

Adega de Moncão Escolha is a blend of the Alvarinho (50 per cent ) and Trajadura (50 per cent ) varieties. The latter lends aromatic peach and orange blossom notes to the wine. The bouquet is intense with fresh lemons, orchard fruits, floral aromas and subtle saline notes. Perfectly balanced with zesty acidity, wrapped in a rich and slightly spritzy mouthfeel. A really crisp, fresh, easy-drinking style for the summer months.

Food suggestions

This wine is ideal for drinking on its own as an aperitif, or with grilled or fried seafood and shellfish. Try it with mussels meuniere and chips, or grilled hake with a citrus or beurre blanc sauce. It is also a wonderful accompaniment to delicious Galway oysters.

Antonia Dominguez will be doing in store tastings to launch the new wines this Saturday June 26 in Joyce’s Fr Griffin Road and Joyce’s Knocknacarra. Fr Griffin Road tastings take place between 12 noon and 2.45pm, with Joyce’s Knocknacarra tastings from 3pm to 6pm.
