Fraudulent Calls
In recent days gardaí have received a number of reports of people receiving phone calls from fraudsters claiming to be members of An Garda Síochána. When they received these calls the number on their phone appears to be a number of a genuine Garda station. This appears to be a nationwide scam involving Garda Station phone numbers in Wexford, Dublin and Donegal.
There are a number of elements involved in these fraudulent calls; Firstly the person receiving the call received a pre-recorded or automated message that prompts them to select an option. This person is then put through to a fraudster alleging to be a member of An Garda Síochána. The fraudster will then either look for personal information or informs the person that their details have been linked to a crime. After the victim gives over personal information they will receive a follow up call from another fraudster seeking more details on behalf of An Garda Síochána. (the number appears to be a genuine Garda Station ).
An Garda would remind the public that An Garda Síochána will never make contact with any member of the public in this way. Members of An Garda Síochána will not phone you seeking personal of financial information.
If people should receive one of these phone calls is as follows: Do not engage with the caller. Do not return the call. Do not follow the automated instructions. Never disclose any personal or financial information over the phone or in an email. Never transfer money. Hang up and end the call as soon you become aware it is fraudulent.
If anyone has fallen victim to this scam or any scam, contact one's financial institution immediately and report the matter to the local Garda station.
