Drug seizures on the increase in Galway

Garda Superintendent says 'a frightening amount of drugs' are in circulation

Cocaine with a street value of €351, 413 has been seized in Galway city during the first five months of this year.

During the same period €140, 758 of cannabis was captured by Garda operations in Galway. Monday's Joint Policing Committee highlighted the increasing number of arrests and seizures being made by An Garda Síochana.

Superintendent Tom Curley said: "We have a very active drugs unit working very closely with regional and national units. We are making detections." He also added that 'a frightening amount of drugs' was in circulation.

Detective Sergeant Cormac Bane, who has been working with the Galway divisional drugs unit for the past 15 months, said: "It appears cocaine is the drug of choice between users and dealers, but operations targeting dealers have been successful."
