Canney demands Government provide additional funding for non-public local roads

Galway County Council has 237 applications for works which will cost c€10 million

The Government must increase the amount of funding for the Local Improvement Scheme to for maintaining roads which are not maintained by the local authorities.

This is the view of Independent Galway East TD, Seán Canney, who noted that the volume of applications under the scheme has increased in recent times.

The Galway County Council has a total of 237 applications, the works for which will cost c€10 million. However, the council allocation for this year is €876,952, which equates to 28 roads being facilitated out of more than 200 applications.

“This funding represents less than 10 per cent of the amount needed,” he said. “The LIS scheme is a very good system. These roads are valuable local amenities servicing land and bogs. They also act as a facility for safe walking and cycling as part of the active travel programme.”
