Farrell to demands Government restore the right to retire at 65

TD calls on TDs across Galway’s three constituencies to back Sinn Féin’s motion in the Dáil today

Galway TDs must stand up for the rights of workers across the city and county, and support a motion that will commit the Government to restoring the right to retire at 65 on a full pension rate.

This is the view of Sinn Féin Galway West TD, Mairéad Farrell, ahead of an SF motion on the issue which will be debated in the Dáil today (Tuesday ).

“People who worked hard all their lives deserve the right to retire on their full pension at 65. It’s time to restore the right to the full rate,” she said. “This is a fundamental issue of dignity for workers. When they reach 65, after a lifetime of work, workers deserve the choice to retire on the full pension rate or to work on their job.”

.

Dep Farrell said she is calling on TDs in Galway West, Galway East, and Roscommon-Galway, but especially on Government TDs in those constituencies, to “stand up for workers” and back Sinn Féin’s motion.

“This is about choice,” she said. “Workers who wish to work beyond 65 must be allowed to do so. Sinn Féin's motion gives workers the choice at 65 to continue to work or to retire on the full pension rate, so that workers can decide. To force workers to retire at 65 is unjust. Workers want to see a fair and just pension system which treats workers with dignity and gives them the choice.”
