Deputy Mayor demands urgent meeting with gardaí on problem of public drinking

Cllr Colette Connolly also calls for ark and ride facilities to be made available for future sports or cultural events

Deputy Mayor Cllr Colette Connolly wants the gardai and the Galway City Council to hold an urgent meeting to discuss the increasing problem of the appropriation of public space to facilitate drinking.

Cllr Connolly previously called on the council to have such a meeting but received absolutely no support, with many councillors agreeing they had full faith in the gardaí to deal with the situation.

However, Cllr Connolly says that she has regularly contacted the gardai on behalf of residents in Bowling Green, Parkavera, Ravens Terrace, Claddagh, the Docks, Knocknacarra, Newcastle and right across the city following complaints regarding drinking in public spaces.

She says that recent weekend events such as the traffic issues with cars at the Salthill Promenade cannot be allowed to continue.

Cllr Connolly has called for all such rallies to be banned and for park and ride facilities to be made available for any large legitimate sports or cultural events in the future.
