Tenders will issue later this year for the €24 million upgrade of Galway city’s Ceannt Station. A contractor is expected to be appointed in 2022, with construction expected to be completed by 2024.
A multi-disciplinary design team has been appointed by Irish Rail with that team currently undertaking detailed design development and the preparation of tender documentation for the construction stage.
Ceannt Station was built in 1851 and the last significant alterations were made in the 1960s. The forthcoming rennocvations will see the full replacement of existing station roof; upgrade of the southern facade; creation of a new main entrance to the station, integrating with the southside development; improved waiting areas for rail and bus passengers within the station; and three additional train platforms and a bay platform.

Planning permission for the redevelopment of Ceannt Station was initially obtained in 2014 and a further extension to that planning consent was granted by Galway City Council in 2019. Funding will be provided by the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund and the Department of Transport.
Minister of the State at the Department, the Fine Gael Galway West TD, Hildegarde Naughton [pictured above], has welcomed the news, saying “a major upgrade is warranted to better accommodate the requirements of a modern day railway station”.
