Preliminary design work on a major upgrade for Oranmore Train Station has begun. The upgrade will see a 1km passing railway loop to allow trains pass each other within the twin track section.
The works will also include the construction of a second platform at the station, a new footbridge over the rail tracks, and lifts to ensure accessibility for all users.
Funding of almost €9.3 million was secured for the project under the Government’s Urban Regeneration Development Fund, while €3 million has also been committed from the Department of Transport. It is expected that this major project will be completed by 2024.

The commencing of the design works has been welcomed by Fine Gael Galway West TD, and Minister for State at the Department of Transport, Hildegarde Naughton [pictured above].
“The upgrade will increase the capacity on the commuter rail line between Athenry and Galway and provide greater access to the town for visitors,” she said. “It’s important the station continues to develop with the town and the transport needs of its inhabitants.”
