Galway's McDonnell stuns Irish international

Galway City Harriers’ rising star, Robert McDonnell, produced another stunning performance at the recent City of Lisburn Open Meet.

McDonnell won the 400m in a new personal best of 47.98, heading off Irish international Andrew Mellon who finished in second.

NUI Galway athlete Roland Surlis also delivered a superb display of 800m running. Closing fast on the leaders, he clocked a personal best of 1.46.93 for a close third place in the men’s A race.

GCH had a number of other athletes who made the trip to Lisburn. Alex Lee clocked 11.88 to win his 100m and then went on to run 24.48 in the 200m. Aoife Sheehy finished third in the 400m hurdles in 1.06.9. Keith Fallon posted a swift time of 1.56.86 over 800m and Aaron Brennan dipped under four minutes for the 1500m to clock an impressive 3.57.38.

USA Action

Alanna Lally continues to make strides in the USA with Temple University.

Her seasonal best of 2:04.62 in the 800m has earned her a spot at the start line on May 27 at the Big East Regional Championships. The top three runners from each of the six heats, plus the next best six times, will advance to the 800m quarter-finals on Saturday (May 29 ) at 7:35 p.m.

Galway 5k series

The midpoint week of the virtual 2021 Galway 5k series concluded recently with the third race seeing Craughwell AC wheelchair athlete Shauna Bocquet posting a superb new series record of 13.3.

The fastest male was Rob Lennon of Castlegar AC in 16.39, and fastest female was Madeline O'Donnell in a time of 19.43. The series continues for two more series of races.

Meanwhile the 2021 Galway Athletics development squads for selected club athletes from U15 to U19 continue apace. The Galway hurdles and jumps squad were held at Ballinderreen last Saturday, while the sprints squad will take place Saturday (May 29 ) in Dangan.
