Voters are entitled to know Labour’s position on the Galway City Outer Bypass, and when Eamon Gilmore visits Galway this week he must spell it out clearly.
This is the view of Fianna Fáil Galway West TD and chairman of the Oireachtas Transport Committee Frank Fahey.
Dep Fahey said Labour councillors have been against the bypass proceeding. In 2005 Labour’s then four city councillors supported a motion by Green councillor Niall Ó Brolcháin, that “all works be suspended” on the bypass.
In December 2008, when the issue of a bypass was raised by Cllr John Connolly regarding the need for an alternative route to be found following the decision by An Bord Pleanála, Labour was still opposed to it.
Dep Fahey has also alleged that Labour candidates, when out canvassing, are claiming to be in support of the bypass “for the purpose of impressing the voters”.
“Labour councillors have shown anything but support for the bypass,” said Dep Fahey, “when Fianna Fáil has been working to progress the project in the greater interests of the city.
