Mayhem - Galway Community Circus youth festival returns with in person and online events

Public events will be held in Shantalla Park all will follow all Covid-19 public health guidelines

Mayhem - Galway Community Circus youth circus festival returns from Saturday May 22 to Sunday May 30 with a mixture of in person events - the first such events in the city since late last year - and online shows.

Mayhem will include performances, games, workshops, and circus talks. All events are free and will be held in Shantalla Park, Galway - for which all Covid-19 public health guidelines will be followed, to ensure a safe environment - and online via Zoom and the Galway Community Circus Facebook page.

“Mayhem has something for everyone,” said Ulla Hokkanen, executive creative director of Galway Community Circus. “we’re excited to bring back some fun, friendship and connection to our community.”

Events include Healthy Ireland Funambulism Workshops, which feature the art of tightwire walking with a balancing pole. A fun way to practise balance, mindfulness, and self-awareness, it is suitable for all body types, ages, and fitness levels.

Outdoor Workshops: Park Up Your Circus, will feature a mix of taster workshops where participants will play games,,and improve their solo acrobatics, juggling, and circus skills.

Circus Talks on Zoom include ‘Our Love for The Streets’, with a performance of ‘New Stool - Old Fool’ by Grant Goldie, commissioned by the National Circus Festival of Ireland, followed by singer-songwriter Nicole Blue about what street performance and busking means to Galway.

Other talks include ‘Running Away with the Circus’, a panel discussion with current and former volunteers on what European volunteering experience can give to volunteers, circus schools, and their communities; ‘Youth Circus in Ireland - What Does It Mean to Us and Why Do We Do It?’ will be a roundtable talk with youth circus members from Belfast, Cloughjordan, and Galway on how Irish youth circuses are adjusting to life during the pandemic.

There will also be a Mayhem Youth Circus Festival Scratch Night featuring performances from youth circus artists and professional guest artists from around the country, plus a game night following the virtual show.
