Lockdown with family inspires award winning photo exhibition

Galway photographer Enda Burke gets his mother and father to pose in deliberately kitschy, humorous, photos

BRIGHT COLOURS, kitsch, a nostalgia for the least worst aspects of 1980s Ireland, and parents doing things not normally expected of parents - this is the new exhibition from Galway photographer, Enda Burke.

Homebound With My Parents is Enda Burke’s funny, witty, light hearted, look at life in Ireland during the lockdown, with his mother and father playing various roles in each of the images, whether that is dad getting his hair done, mum lifting weights, of both of them trying to enjoy a milkshake.

.

“I was drawn to the monotony associated with family life during the pandemic,” says Enda. “Using colour humor, kitsch, and play as an anecdote to the gloom of Covid, I wanted to utilize nostalgia as a form as escapism from the lockdown.”

The photos saw Enda construct deliberately gaudily, colourful, sets in his own home, and getting his parents to pose in various scenarios. Already it has won the International Bartur photo prize, and has been featured in Rolling Stone, Causeette, Irish Arts review, Feature Shoot, and the Fotonostrum Spanish Photography Journal.

.

Galway can now see the photographs as they are currently on display upstairs at the Coffeewerks and Art Press, Quay Street. The exhibition, which will be on display for a month, will include an installation, a series of coffee collaborations, and postcards.
