Mayo County Council’s Arts Service in partnership with the Jackie Clarke Museum, is delighted to announce the recipient of the Decade of Centenaries Artist Residency.
The Decade of Centenaries was initiated in 2012 with a focus on the many significant centenaries occurring over the period 2012 – 2023. The Centenaries Programme complements the ongoing programme of annual State commemorations with special commemorative events on the centenary of key historical events.
To commemorate the Decade of the Centenaries, Mayo County Council Arts Service invited submissions for a special residency working with the Jackie Clarke Collection’s artefacts relating to this period in Irish history. The residency will culminate with a publicly accessible artwork in November 2021.
Jackie Clarke (1927 – 2000 ), was a Ballina businessman and a genius collector of Irish Historical material spanning over 400 years. The collection is available publicly for the people of Ballina, Mayo and Ireland, at the former provincial bank building, Pearse Street, Ballina.
Achill native, visual artist Margo McNulty, has been awarded the residency. McNulty’s work deals with hidden history, memory and place, and with aspects of everyday life and experience. She creates a visual language that expresses the intricacies of memory, creating arenas for identity to be revealed and understood in the broader context of the past.
Recent Irish exhibitions of her work have been held at the Museum of Country Life in Castlebar, Roscommon Arts Centre, and Claremorris Open Exhibition. She has also had work in recent international group shows in Paris, Cologne, Leuven (Belgium ) and Poland with the Graphic Studio and the Achill Artist Group.
