Shelbourne test next on the agenda for Galway WFC

Another demanding away fixture awaits against Shelbourne for Galway WFC in the WNL on Saturday when Billy Clery's outfit travel to Tolka Park.

Four victories from five matches confirms Shelbourne's considerable potential and ability. Managed by Noel King, who is assisted by Galway United's 1991 FAI Cup winning manager Joey Malone, Shelbourne remain eager to recapture the title.

With seven points registered from a possible 15, Galway want to stitch a decent run together. Injuries disturbed Galway in the south east when Wexford Youths ruthlessly punished defensive lapses.

That was a bitterly disappointing afternoon for Galway, who will want to summon a response in the capital. Rachel Kearns missed the Wexford encounter, but the Crossmolina star's brilliant early season form has been rewarded with the SSE Airtricity WNL player of the month award for April.

Kearns struck six goals in the opening four games for Galway to illustrate her potent attacking threat. "I'm currently number one in the Golden Boot race but at the start of the year it wasn't even a goal," Kearns says.

"I was just going out to see how I got on, I didn't put any pressure on myself, I just going out to enjoy myself.

"In the first game I happened to get a hat-trick so that got off to a good start and I was leading from the start. Then I got a goal in every game since I've played."

The talented Kearns is eager to return to action soon as an interesting WNL campaign continues.

"It's great to be number one but some of the girls are catching up now, like Ellen Molloy is coming up now in second place," Kearns adds.

"She will put it up to me. Hopefully when I get back from [injury] I'll try to score a few more goals to see how it goes."
