Council will not waive car parking charges as restrictions ease

"The availability of parking is not an issue, and I don't believe the rates are a deterrent"

The Galway City Council will not waive car parking charges as restrictions begin to ease.

During Monday's online city council meeting, Cllr Eddie Hoare, highlighting the need for increased footfall as businesses return, asked if there was merit in reducing the cost of parking.

Director of services Uinsionn Finn stated that changing the parking charges would require amendments to bye laws. "The availability of parking is not an issue, and I don't believe the rates are a deterrent," he said.

It was also added that private car parks could close, with Brendan McGrath, Galway City Council chief executive, discussing the matter. "The Government did compensate us for goods and services," he said, "including paid parking compensation which won't be forthcoming for 2021."
