CARNMORE was dealt a jobs blow last night with the news that long-term employer Steiner is to close with the loss of almost 50 jobs.
The company which has been in production since the 1970s is based right opposite the entrance to Galway Airport — indeed, it was the original Mr Steiner who originally developed the airstrip at Carnmore.
The company supplies the capacitor industry with raw materials. It is believed that management will enter into negotiations with unions next Monday to organise redundancy packages.
The 45 staff at Steiner were informed of the closure at a general meeting yesterday.
Production will cease at the plant on June 12, as it is believed that it is unable to compete with similar suppliers in Eastern Europe.
Next week, SIPTU the IDA and IBEC will enter into negotiations with the
company to oragnise redundancy packages. The company, which has been in production since 1970 was originally based in Mervue Industrial estate. Since 1976 Steiner has been based at a custom-made facility in Carnmore.
