Galway International Arts Festival moves to autumn for 2021

Full programme details for GIAF’s second autumn based festival to take place in June

For the second year running, the Galway International Arts Festival will take place in the autumn, with the city’s premiere arts events running from August 28 to September 18.

Full programme details will be announced in June, but with the Covid-19 pandemic ongoing the festival will include a hybrid programme of live and online events. The centre-piece will be the much anticipated second part of John Gerrard’s Mirror Pavilion - Leaf Work, opening in Derrigimlagh Bog on August 28 and running throughout the festival.

.

The festival also announced details of a new commissioning/bursary strand - Elevate, which aims to support artists as they create and present original, contemporary and captivating ideas to engage both live and digital audiences. Full details, including closing date for applications, are available at giaf.ie

In the run up to GIAF 2021, audiences are being invited to listen to the GIAF’s new Vinyl Hours Podcast, a series of intimate conversations in which artists discuss the soundtracks of their lives with host Tiernan Henry. Guests will include artistic director of the Abbey Theatre, Caitríona McLaughlin, The Academic’s Stephen Murtagh, and The Stunning’s Steve Wall.

.

Last year’s autumn arts festival saw attendances at live art experiences across the four-week period totalling 126,327, while an additional 28,459 people engaged with the programme from home.

“We are hugely grateful for the support and loyalty we received from audiences last year,” said the GIAF in a statement. “The team is very much looking forward to another great festival this year.”
