An interesting WNL campaign continues with Galway WFC facing a tricky test away to a highly regarded Wexford Youths at Ferrycarrig Park on Saturday (3pm ).
Billy Clery’s developing team enjoyed a convincing 4-1 success over Treaty United at Eamonn Deacy Park last weekend.
Prompted by the splendid play of Savannah McCarthy and Sinead Donovan, Galway seized control netting four goals inside a remarkable seven minute spell.
Two Kate Slevin corner kicks caused panic in the Treaty area with Lynsey McKey and McCarthy rattling the visitors’ net.
Shauna Brennan subsequently added a third before McKey turned provider for Rachel Kearns, who notched her sixth goal of a hugely productive season.
Mayo Ladies Footballer Kearns has added a potent attacking threat to the Galway squad and the March and April evidence suggests she will surely be in contention for international recognition shortly.
There has been plenty to admire in the manner in which Galway continue to pass and probe, but Clery will be certainly aware of Wexford’s craft. Though Athlone Town produced a battling display in the south east Wexford were still able to prevail.
Similar to Galway, Wexford have accumulated seven points from four matches in 2021 so both clubs know the importance of the upcoming clash. Galway’s blend of emerging and established players remain eager to make an impact on the national stage with Ruth Fahy’s return in the Treaty triumph another boost.
Teenagers Therese Kinnevey, Slevin, and Brennan remain key figures for a Galway side loaded with promise.
Lessons were learned when losing to DLR Waves, but there is no disguising the fact that this tussle with Wexford is classed in the revealing category. Clery, ever the competitor, wants Galway to seriously challenge for silverware and taking Wexford’s scalp would provide an injection of confidence and momentum.
