The Galway City Council hopes to purchase mobile stages, festival flooring, and to improve facilities in public areas enabling multiple spaces become venues for events, festivals, and community activities.
Galway City Council's 'Re-imagining Our Outdoor Spaces Fund 2021' will assist in the creation of cultural offerings this summer. It is envisaged the portable stages will enable local arts and community groups to deliver theatre performances and concerts.
The Galway City Council 'Update on Tourism Infrastructure Projects 2021' said: "From our engagements with local theatre groups and festival organisers we have identified the need for two stages.
'Hugely welcome'
"The smaller stage will be ideal for local events within the community in local neighbourhoods and intimate performances in the core city centre streets. The larger stage will be used for festivals and events and can be used in larger public areas such as public parks and car parks."
Some councillors welcomed the news for the arts sector which should provide a welcome boost for the industry in Galway. Cllr Peter Keane said the provision of the two stages is "hugely welcome. We did undertake to look at outdoor stage space."
