Plans for activity centre at the old waterworks in Terryland due by years end

Corrib Blueway development is 'coming together' says Fine Gael's Cllr Eddie Hoare

By December, the Galway City Council plans to have a design for an activity centre at the old waterworks site in the Terryland area.

It is envisaged that the project will be completed in two years as a central part of the The Corrib Blueway development. Failte Ireland will meet with the Galway City Council this week to advance plans for a new water sports hub.

This centre will be developed further in the coming years to include additional facilities such as an interpretative centre for Terryland Forest Park and a cycling hub as part of the Connemara Greenway. The proposals were discussed during Monday's online Galway City Council meeting.

Fine Galway Galway City Central councillor, Eddie Hoare, welcomed the progress. "We can start to see pieces of a long term plan coming together," he said. "It will benefit Galway as a tourist destination and it will be for locals too."

Cllr John Connolly also suggested the site could be used as an educational resource, to look beyond its recreational use.

Brian Barrett, director of services for the Galway City Council, stated that it was key to "have a pristine environment". He also confirmed that the Galway City Council has engaged with local rowing clubs and that they will hold further talks.
