The Regeneration Masterplan for Tuam from the Galway County Council has been hailed as a “basis for ensuring Tuam remains a growth centre, and an attractive location to visit, work, live in and raise a family”.
This is the view of Independent Galway East TD, Seán Canney, who said, “For the first time ever, we now have a specific plan for the town”. However he said it is imperative the plan be acted on and not allowed “gather dust on some shelf”.
'Unique position'

He is now calling for funding to be sought from the Rural Regeneration Fund and the Urban Regeneration Fund. “Tuam is in a unique position in that it qualifies for both funds,” said the TD. “We now need to be ready and have the resources to implement this masterplan”.
Dep Canney is calling for the targeting of high priority projects - improving access; modernisation of the Market Square; development of the Station Quarter; development of an arts centre - so they can be delivered “in the short term”.
The master plan was funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development under the Rural Regeneration Fund and initiated while Dep Canney was Minister for Rural Affairs.
