FINGHIN COLLINS and the ConTempo Quartet will join forces for a concert of music by Shostakovich, Keal, and Brahms, to be broadcast live from Eyre Square.
The concert, presented by Music for Galway, will take place on Tuesday April 27 at 8pm, where it will be streamed live from the Ballroom of the Hardiman Hotel. It will open with Shostakovich’s Five Pieces for two violins and piano, which skips from a gavotte to a polka, via a mournful central elegy.
.
The next piece - Ballade for viola and piano in Fm - is somewhat obscure. Minna Keal [pictured above] was born into a Yiddish-speaking family of eastern European origin. A devout communist, she abandoned her composition studies to work in the family book-publishing business and also for The Daily Worker newspaper in London. Her Ballade was written in 1929 and includes many elements of her Jewish heritage.
The concert concludes with one of the most popular works in the entire chamber music repertoire – Johannes Brahms’ glorious Piano Quintet in Fm - a work of drama, passion, lyricism, virtuosity and energy.
Tickets are €15 from musicforgalway.ie The performance will continue to be available to access and purchase for a further 72 hours when it will come off-line on Friday April 30 at 8pm.
