Byrne calls for full time wardens needed for city's main parks

Motion from Fianna Fáil councillor to be debated at next city council meeting

The need for full time, on-the-ground, wardens, for seven days a week in the main city parks, will be discussed again by councillors next Monday.

A motion on this issue has been put forward Fianna Fáíl Galway City Central councillor, Imelda Byrne. Ensuring the parks are safe and maintained for the benefit of the public is also part of Cllr Byrne's motion which sparked an interesting debate at this week's online city council meeting.

Several councillors spoke about the issue and how grounds and parks need to be safe and secure for the people of Galway.

.

Mayor Mike Cubbard offered his 'full support to the proactive motion', stating that one of the biggest deterrents in reducing vandalism was getting 'boots on the ground' with operational staff.

Galway City Council chief executive Brendan McGrath stated that it was 'a great idea', but that 'it needs to be looked at properly' regarding how it would be implemented in the future. The issue will be debated once more at a special meeting for motions on Monday.
