City council records end of year surplus for 2020

Government supports through Covid-19 pandemic allowed local authority to record €160,000 surplus

Government supports provided throughout the Covid pandemic enabled the Galway City Council to record a €160,000 end of year surplus in its 2020 annual financial statement.

Head of Finance Declan Smyth provided a comprehensive report for councillors highlighting the importance and value of the assistance received from the State.

In the region of €700,000 of the environment budget went unspent with city council officials explaining that was chiefly due to operations work unable to take place.

Director of Services for housing, Dermot Mahon, stated there were "significant restrictions" on street cleaning and the ability to provide that service. He also highlighted that "the level and incidence of illegal dumping since last summer has been significant", with more than 130 complaints recorded and that it is viewed as an ongoing problem.
