I often think paint colour is one of the most underused elements in a garden and it’s something I always address when I’m producing garden plans for my clients. Paint can make such a difference to the feel of a space, making it feel bigger, smarter and pulled together, but can also be used to great effect on individual features like furniture to transform it.
One of my favourite design features, especially in urban gardens, is the raised bed, which can be used in so many ways and shapes to maximise the space – and a well chosen paint finish can help it blend in elegantly or alternatively make a punchy statement.
Masonry paint ranges by Dulux and Fleetwood have some really good modern neutrals chosen to work well in Irish light and sit well in the Irish landscape, and these are often my first port of call. Garden walls and features don’t have to match your home exactly, but I always make sure they will work well with the shades used or intended for the house itself so that everything flows together seamlessly.
One thing to bear in mind is to be careful of white – lashing a couple of coats of white over everything can seem like an easy solution, but in our climate and with our light levels it can so easily appear grey and chilly on dull days and blindingly bright when it’s sunny. Instead, opt for neutrals in shades of stone, off white or gentle greenish greys and you’ll be amazed at how these bring a touch of sophistication while acting as a flattering backdrop for plants and paving.
Anne’s Tip of the Week:
Consider the surroundings of your home if you’re thinking of updating some garden features – you will enhance the view if you stick to shades that work with rather than against the other buildings visible outside the boundaries. A rebellious colour clash might seem tempting but remember you’ll have to live with the result!
