Galway WFC face Bohemians on Saturday

Another important Saturday afternoon in the WNL beckons for Galway WFC, who host Bohemians at Eamonn Deacy Park, kick off 2pm.

Last weekend’s thrilling 3-3 Corribside draw with Cork City featured a hat-trick from the dynamic Rachel Kearns, but the visitors’ determination was rewarded with a late equaliser.

Ultimately manager Billy Clery acknowledged it was a disappointing outcome for Galway, who delivered an impressive display.

“For us it was definitely two points dropped, but again we could take a lot of positives from the game in general,” Clery says.

“We created a lot of chances, we played really well, but we just made errors that costs us dearly in the end. We can take positives from the game, but we need to learn, to move forward for next week.”

Kearns, renowned for her exploits as a Mayo Ladies footballer, has added an extra dimension to Galway’s play.

“She did very well for us,” Clery states. “That was her debut for us and she got the limelight with the goals, she took all of the goals really well. There was some really good play in between to create the passages of play, to create the opportunities for her.

“Rachel was fantastic for us, it was a good overall team performance. We were just disappointed not to the get the reward of three points at the end of it.”

Bohemians, who defeated Treaty United 6-2 in their opener, will hit the west armed with confidence according to Clery.

“They will come down here bouncing, full of confidence and full of beans,” Clery replies. “For us after the game the last day it nearly felt like a loss so we need to pick ourselves up, to dust ourselves off, to get back into action.

“We will go out with a positive attitude, to look to get three points, to get back on the road pushing towards the top three.”

The considerable promise of teenagers Therese Kinnevey, Shauna Brennan, and Kate Slevin bodes well for Galway, but Clery believes his squad can improve further.

“We know they are young, everybody knows they are young, but they are players,” Clery comments. “That is the way we have to treat them.

“So they are learning all of the time, but for us we need to be competing across the board. A team is 11 players, one or two won't win a game, the girls are learning their trade.

“We had some excellent performances in the rest of the team, we had big contributions made all over the park.

“They are coming on, they are really developing well, but for us to succeed we need to get more out of everyone, to push on. Everybody has to improve individually, that will help the team collectively.”
