Climate and biodiversity motion to be debated by councillors in April

Green councillor Martina O'Connor said issue must be raised as part of building 'a Galway future generations will be proud of'

A motion proposing that 'Galway City Council declare a Climate and Biodiversity Emergency' will be debated next month.

Cllr Martina O'Connor's motion will be one of a number of items discussed at a specially convened meeting that will be arranged in April.

During last Monday's online meeting Galway City Council chief executive Brendan McGrath stated that a number of issues needed to be clarified and that it was hugely important for Galway City that an appropriate motion was adopted.

Galway in the future

Cllr O'Connor said: "It must be the cornerstone of our future in Galway and elsewhere. Actions and decisions must be made to protect us and future generations in line with our environment and not against it. I do not seek to restrict Galway City Council, but enable us to make decisions that supports Galway's growth and development in a healthy way.

She added: "As we have learned this year healthy growth is the only one that matters. We must work very hard together to plan and build a Galway that future generations will be proud of."
