Further public consultation to take place on Gort Flood Relief Scheme

Consultations with landowners and homeowners to resume once Covid-19 restrictions are lifted

Further public consultations on the Gort Flood Relief Scheme will take place with landowners and homeowners once the Covid-19 restrictions are lifted.

The decision follows contact between Independent Galway East TD, Sean Canney, and the Minister of the Office of Public Works, Patrick O’Donovan. This was on foot of a recent meeting last night between the Gort Flood Relief Committee and public representatives where concerns were expressed about the lack of engagement on the ground between the design team and local communities.

Severe flooding

“There is a virtual public consultation, but this is a very complicated and unique engineering project,” said Dep Canney. “It is important the public can engage fully with the design staff.”

Dep Canney has welcomed the announcement that there will be consultations on this issue, post-pandemic. “People have suffered so much due to regular severe flooding,” he said. “I am confident we now have a scheme that is cost effective and environmentally feasible.”
