Spring into Nature with Galway County Council

Cuir tús leis an Earrach amuigh faoin spéir le Comhairle Cathrach na Gaillimhe

Spring has sprung and the deep buzz of the Bumble bee’s flight is beginning to be heard over the gardens, meadows and parks of Galway City. From the majestic woodlands of Barna, Dangan, Menlo, and Merlin to the recent peoples planted Terryland Forest Park; there is such an abundance of biodiversity and nature on our doorsteps, we really are very lucky in Galway City!

Galway City Council wants young people to get out, explore and learn about what is on their doorsteps. Can you identify wild garlic or Red cover? Did you know the humble dandelion is part of the sunflower family? Do you also know that with climate change, plants are flowering earlier each year and the growing season is extending?

We all need to protect nature don’t we? That is why Galway City Council have a team of people working to plant more bee, butterfly and pollinator friendly species of plants and flowers in our City. Nettles are lovely aren’t they? Okay they can sting you! But they are also amazing food for Butterflies and that’s why we need to keep some places wild for Nature for our Butterflies and other insects. (Nettles also make an amazing soup but that’s for another day! )

We hope you enjoy this Scavenger hunt and remember to ‘’Leave no Trace’’, leave nature as you found it so the next person can enjoy it just as much as you do!

Tá an t-earrach chugainn agus tá dordán na mbumbóg le cloisteáil de réir mar a eitlíonn siad trí ghairdíní, móinteáin agus páirceanna Chathair na Gaillimhe. Ó choillearnacha maorga Bhearna, an Daingin, Mhionlaigh agus Mhuirlinne go dtí Páirc Foraoise Thír Oileáin a leagadh amach le deireanas; tá an oiread sin bithéagsúlachta agus dúlra ar leac an dorais againn, tá an t-ádh dearg linn i gCathair na Gaillimhe!

Tá Comhairle Cathrach na Gaillimhe ag iarraidh ar dhaoine óga dul amach ag taiscéalaíocht agus foghlaim faoin dúlra atá ar leac an dorais acu. An féidir leat an ghairleog fhiáin nó an tseamair dhearg a aithint? An raibh a fhios agat go mbaineann an caisearbhán uiríseal le fine lus na gréine? An bhfuil a fhios agat freisin, leis an athrú aeráide, go bhfuil plandaí ag bláthú níos luaithe gach bliain agus go bhfuil an séasúr fáis ag fadú?

Ní mór dúinn go léir an dúlra a chosaint, nach fíor? Sin an fáth a bhfuil foireann daoine ag Comhairle Cathrach na Gaillimhe atá ag obair chun níos mó speiceas plandaí agus bláthanna atá neamhdhíobhálach do bheacha, féileacán agus pailineoirí a chur ar fud na cathrach. Is breá linn go léir neantóga, nach breá? Tuigim! Dónn siad thú! Ach is bia iontach iad freisin do na féileacáin agus sin an fáth a gcaithfimid roinnt áiteanna a choinneáil fiáin don dúlra, dár bhféileacáin agus d’fheithidí eile. (Déanann neantóga anraith iontach freisin, ach sin scéal eile! )

Tá súil againn go dtaitneoidh an Tóraíocht Baiitheora seo leat. Ná dearmad “Gan Rian a Fhágáil’, ionas gur féidir leis na daoine a bheidh san áit sin i do dhiaidh an taitneamh céanna a bhaint as!
