A funding application has been submiited to Fáilte Ireland for a new water sport activity centre based at the old Waterworks in Terryland.

The application has been submittted by the Galway City Council. Cpouncil CEO Brendan McGrath confirmed on Monday that it will form an integral part of the proposed Corrib Blueway.

"From the report we issued in conjunction with the 2021 budget we circulated in November 2020, we indicated that we were hoping to use the old Waterworks as a base for water sport activities," Mr McGrath [pictured below] stated. "We have since submitted a funding application to Failte Ireland in relation to that.

"The use of the building is seen as an integral part of the proposed Corrib Blueway which we outlined in that November 2020 document. We included funding in the 2021 budget to progress planning for the proposed Blueway project with key stakeholders."

'Exciting project'

Mr McGrath also confirmed that the Waterworks site is retained by Galway City Council. "As we indicated back in 2020 and previously, the old Waterworks at Terryland isn't being transferred, we agreed with Irish Water shortly after its establishment that it would be retained by Galway City Council and it would not be transferred to Irish Water," Mr McGrath added.

"We see that the potential of that really exciting project, of the Blueway, can ultimately have new tourism, visitor, and recreational facility stretching all the way effectively from the centre of Galway city up through County Galway and perhaps linking up with Lough Mask in County Mayo."
