Galway 2020 granted €3.6 million in funds by City Hall since 2018

€2.2 million paid in 2018; €1.1 million in 2019, and 2020 saw more than €300,000

The Galway City Council has granted €3.6 million in funds to Galway 2020 since 2018.

Brendan McGrath, Galway City Council chief executive, explained the figures involved to councillors on Monday.

"The official title of the 2020 company is Galway Cultural Development Activity Company Ltd. You will see in 2018 we paid almost €2.2 million, 2019 we paid €1.1 million, and in February of 2020 we paid just over €300,000," Mr McGrath confirmed.

"The total amount the city council paid to that company was just over 3.6 million, the exact figure was €3,602,075.40. The city council - before that company came into operation - we funded the costs of the bid, that process ran from 2014 up into early 2018 or thereabouts."
