United earn pre-season victory over Longford

LONGFORD TOWN 1

GALWAY UNITED 2

This was another encouraging pre-season win for Galway United, who defeated Longford Town at Bishopsgate.

Two victories and a draw against top flight opposition bodes well for John Caulfield’s charges, who host Shelbourne in what promises to be a revealing SSE Airtricity League First Division opener on March 26.

Chances were scarce in the opening period, but two minutes before the break United nearly hit the front.

Francely Lomboto, busy in attack, crafted space for Carlton Ubaezuounu, who just couldn’t supply the required finish.

The promising Lomboto impressed for United, who were solid defensively as the teams departed deadlocked at the interval.

Two minutes after the restart, though, Lomboto pounced to confidently drill the visitors’ ahead.

Substitute Ruairi Keating announced his arrival into the contest by punishing a Longford defensive lapse to score in the 69th minute.

Longford narrowed the gap moments later when Dean Byrne struck for Daire Doyle’s outfit.

Next on the agenda for United is a clash with Bohemians, who visit Eamonn Deacy Park on Friday.

Galway United: K Horgan; O’Keeffe, McCormack, Walsh (Boylan, 67 ); C Horgan, O’Dea (Kelly, 46 ), Christopher (Nugent, 84 ), Ubaezuounu (Doherty, 46 ); Place (Hurley, 67 ); Lomboto (Cunningham, 67 ), Waweru (Keating, 67 ).
