Cannon welcomes choice of Athenry Castle as Galway’s greening beacon

Fine Gael TD Ciaran Cannon has welcomed a decision by the OPW and Failte Ireland to choose Athenry Castle as one of 41 national sites to be illuminated in green for the 2021 St. Patrick’s Day Festival.

Athenry Castle is the building chosen for Co. Galway to be part of the national festival which will run from the 12th - 17th March. The castle will be illuminated using green filters, specialist lamps and existing lighting control systems. Deputy Cannon says that the choice of Athenry Castle as a greening location is an important one in the context of its place in the history of Galway.

“This is indeed an honour for Athenry and its people to have Athenry Castle chosen as a national greening location for our St. Patrick’s Day Festival. The castle is an iconic site nationally and internationally, it being one of the best preserved Anglo-Norman castles in Europe. It was also the site for our county’s Easter Rising commemoration in 2016 which saw thousands of people in attendance on the day”, said Deputy Cannon.

Help Galway Walking Club fund Pieta House in novel walk in your 5k limit

The Galway Walking Club is the largest walking club in Galway and has 300 plus members. Established in 1994 and implements a wide range of weekly walking activities both in Ireland and in Europe. Galway Walking Club’s annual marathon is held in the Maumturks each August and attracts 200 walkers from all over Ireland.

As the club’s weekly walks and mountain climbs are suspended, and in an effort to contribute to the work of Pieta House, which provides a free, professional one to one therapeutic service to people who are in distress and need help, the Galway Walking Club in January launched a challenge to its members and the general public to walk a Half Marathon (21km ) or a Mini Marathon (10km ) all within the current Covid-19 restrictions and not more than 5km from one’s home. Participants can complete this walk anytime until the current lockdown has been lifted.

This is a once-off event - donations are at one’s own discretion and can be made anonymously by logging onto https://www.idonate.ie/GalwayWalkingClubFundraiser .

At the moment €800 has been raised and more donations are expected. However the Club asks walkers to feel free to participate in this challenge without making any contribution.

Please let the Galway Walking Club know of your achievement on [email protected]. You will be registered onto the “roll of honour”

Many members and friends have already taken up the challenge, so now, we are challenging you!
