Dealing with anxiety and loneliness

"As I write this article, it’s a sunny morning in early Spring. There are signs of buds on trees and daffodils are beginning to make their presence known. However, the country is still in the grips of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the hope that the vaccine is providing, severe restrictions still cast a long shadow over most of us, with no certainty as to when loved ones can unite again and the economy can open," says Proconsult's Dermot Hughes.

Feelings of anxiousness and loneliness are not uncommon as people struggle with new norms.. We hear constantly on the news of the impact that the pandemic is having on our mental health and well-being. However, there are a number of activities that we can do that can help us maintain good mental health: doing some exercise, trying to get a good night’s sleep and eating healthily.

All of these are perhaps more difficult to do now during lockdown, but some positive level of engagement is possible. Try to have a routine – set time aside for some exercise, get outside for a walk – even 20 to 30 minutes is beneficial. Try to go to bed at a reasonable and regular time and do the same getting up. Be conscious of what we eat – don’t just engage in mindless eating. Small adjustments to our daily lives, can have a positive impact on how we feel.
