Learn about recovery in mental health with Galway Recovery College

Galway Recovery College offers education in recovery from mental health and/or life challenges through transformative learning. Usually based in NUIG, we have been offering all recovery education sessions online via Zoom since last March. Our students say that they look forward to our sessions which also provide enjoyable and productive connection in these times of isolation.

People can and do recover from mental health challenges and the recovery approach recognises that everyone is a unique individual. Our life experiences are unique and so are our experiences of mental health challenges. We explore a wide range of issues; in our Empowering Recovery programme we are currently focusing on self-compassion and self-care. Next month we will be offering Wellness Recovery Action Planning (WRAP ).

Recovery education encourages everyone to engage in a positive, interactive learning environment that supports recovery. Our programmes are not lectures but, rather, a series of interactive recovery conversations about pathways to recovery.

All modules are co-designed, co-facilitated and quality assured by teams of people with lived experience of mental health challenges, family members or carers and mental health service providers, working as equals. This ensures that people with lived experience are at the centre of everything we do and their voices are heard and reflected in the design and facilitation of our sessions.

Our students enjoy the peer support they offer each other as well as their learning about recovery. One student said that participating in the college made “The world of difference, a beacon of hope, a lighthouse of hope in a world of darkness and despair. It has given me such a connection to other people, a belief that things can change for the better”.
