Galway WFC host first pre-season friendly

Galway WFC’s pre-season preparations continue with Billy Clery’s promising team facing Bohemians in a friendly at Maree on Sunday (2pm ).

Several emerging teenage players are currently in training with Clery’s outfit, which is getting ready for the upcoming WNL commencing at the end of March.

“I've no doubt that a number of them will make an impact this year,” Clery says. “Also we will have four or five new faces into the group, players living within our catchment area.

“In the next week we will finalise our squad which will be supplemented by our U19 squad. We will have a core senior group of about 18 players, then we will have players from our U19 squad coming in and out.

“Any girl performing well with our U19s we will be talking with coaches Emer Flatley and Phil Trill and if anyone is doing well they will be rewarded and get pushed into the senior group.”

Friendly fixtures against Bohemians and Peamount United are on the agenda for Galway WFC.

“It is great to be back in action,” Clery states. “Last week some days we had inclement weather conditions, other than that everything is going great. We are lucky enough when we started back we went out to Maree-Oranmore's Astroturf, we trained out there.

“We were back in Dangan this week, we trained on the grass because we prefer to train on grass as the matches in the league are played on grass based pitches. We are gearing up for the start of the season, we have a friendly game against Bohemians in Maree on Sunday afternoon.

“Then the following week we have pencilled in a friendly against Peamount in Athlone. So preparations are going well, the players are picking up as it is pre-season, and it all bodes well.”
